Across the Dnieper River is the Defense of the Motherland Monument, also known as She Who Must Be Obeyed. The Amazon-proportioned statue is the first of many monuments we saw to The Great Patriotic War (known to Americanskis as World War II). There is a museum of the war in the base of the statue.
To the right of the picture is a cathedral tower of Caves Monastery, which dates to the 11th C. and is still active.
To the left of the picture is new housing being quickly and cheaply erected outside Kiev.
